LakeCity Woodworkers
LakeCity Employment Services Association is a non-profit agency that offers free employment services to people with a mental illness. Our service is mobile – which means that we can come to you. And service is available throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) – from Ecum Secum to Hubbards. Our programs use a client-centred approach that encourages clients to build skills that are necessary to sustain themselves in employment.
Our goal is to help mental health consumers to improve their quality of life by assisting them to gain independence through work. akeCity began in 1972 as the Dartmouth Activity Centre. As part of the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Centre provided life skills and recreation for clients of mental health services who were reintegrating into the community. Early on, clients identified work as an important means of maintaining their health and LakeCity Woodworkers was begun in response to this demand. Our association was incorporated in 1982 and we moved to our current location. In 1988, the Community Employment Program was added to access a wider variety of employment opportunities.
Our retail operation started with a limited range of simple furniture. Today, LakeCity’s Retail Store offers a large variety of high quality solid wood products. We assist 50+ individuals in our On Site program, 400 in our Community Employment Program and employ 31 ful-time staff members. We’ve recently expanded our building to allow us to continue to grow.
